Flood Relief Appeal – Cyclone Ditwah

What is the situation?

Cyclone Ditwah, brought torrential rainfall, destructive winds, and severe flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka. Initial assessments indicate this may be the worst flood event in 20 years, affecting over 800,000 individuals (234,503 families) across all 25 districts of the country

As of this morning of 30 November 2025, the cyclone has passed over, and rainfall and winds have ceased. However, the situation remains precarious. Water levels are now rising in the Kelaniya and Kalu Ganga rivers, posing a new threat to communities in low-lying areas of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, and other parts of Western Sri Lanka. These areas already record some of the highest numbers of affected persons nationally

Access to several districts, particularly in the central hill country. It continues to be challenging due to damaged infrastructure and communication disruptions

Sewa Sri Lanka Volunteer Activities

Despite difficult conditions, Sewa volunteers have been active across multiple districts, especially in the Central Province and parts of Sabaragamuwa.

Activities Completed

  • 29 November (Saturday):
Volunteers in Ratnapura District distributed food packets to several needy and affected households.

  • 30 November (Sunday):
With the weather improving today, more volunteers have been able to mobilize. Initial activities include:

    • Cleaning of public spaces, particularly Temples, community halls, and other common areas that were inundated.

    • Restoring basic functionality in community sites to support ongoing local relief operations.

Planned Activities for Coming Days

Given the rising river levels and constrained access in many areas, Sewa Sri Lanka will prioritize flexible, community-based interventions, including:

a. Blood Donation Camp – Major towns and Cities

HSS and Seva Sri Lanka is planning to hold Blood Donation camps in major towns and cities. As the first one of this series a Blood Donation Camp is being organized at the Rathineswaram Sivan Temple Cultural Hall.

b. Community Kitchens

The government has begun operating community kitchens in heavily affected districts, but coverage gaps remain. Sewa Sri Lanka will focus on:

  • Setting up community kitchens where needed.

  • Delivering ready-to-eat food packets to vulnerable individuals, especially elderly residents, persons with disabilities, and families unable to leave their homes due to inundation or damaged roads.

c. Continued Public-Space Clean-up

Ensuring Temples, community halls, school grounds, and gathering areas are functional is essential for:

  • Relief distributions

  • Shelter operations

  • Cultural and community continuity during recovery

Volunteers will continue coordinated clean-up operations over the next several days.

Your support can make all the difference. A donation today will provide shelter kits for displaced families, ready-to-eat meals for the hungry, medical aid for the injured, and hope for farmers who have lost everything. Every contribution counts—every dollar brings dignity where there is despair.

Together, let us stand with the people of SriLanka h in this hour of need.
