Goonj, Garba and Ghar: Belgium’s Indian Diaspora Comes Together for Nepal

When floods and landslides devastate communities, the loss goes far beyond homes and infrastructure. Families can be left without shelter, clean water, medical care, and other essentials needed to rebuild their lives.

In response to the ongoing humanitarian needs in Nepal, Sewa International Europe continues to support disaster-affected communities with relief assistance, including temporary shelter kits, clean drinking water, and medical aid. As the scale of destruction remains significant, continued community support is vital.

One Hour of Garba, A Goonj of Compassion

On September 12, 2026, the Indian diaspora in Belgium came together in Kortenberg for a special charity fundraiser—an energetic one-hour Garba Steps Workshop dedicated to supporting flood-affected families in Nepal.

Garba, traditionally performed in vibrant concentric circles, celebrates togetherness, connection, and community. On this occasion, every step carried a deeper purpose. Participants transformed their joy and collective energy into sewa—selfless service—helping extend a helping hand to families affected by the disaster.

The initiative was driven by Sewa Belgium volunteers Ruta Kapre, Anand Gopalan, and Priya Amit, with professional instructor Karishma Chanodia leading the workshop. Participants of different ages came together to learn traditional Garba steps, enjoy the rhythm, and contribute to a humanitarian cause.

From Garba to Ghar

The spirit of giving was captured in the guiding thought, “Data shatgunam bhavati”—what is given multiplies.

Through their participation and generosity, the community helped raise vital funds to strengthen Sewa Europe’s continuing relief efforts in Nepal. The gathering demonstrated how cultural celebrations can become meaningful platforms for community service.

The organizers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Karishma Chanodia, the volunteers, and every participant whose time, enthusiasm, and generosity made the fundraiser possible.

What began as one hour of Garba in Kortenberg became a powerful expression of community and compassion—connecting people in Belgium with families in need in Nepal.
