As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening communities, promoting volunteerism, and fostering social cohesion among immigrant families in Finland, SEWA Europe lead by Devayani and Isha Kulkarni, organized a Mother's Day Community Picnic in Tampere on 10 May 2026. The event brought together Indian women and children living in the region for an afternoon of celebration, meaningful dialogue, and community engagement.
SEWA Europe believes that strong communities are built through human connections, mutual support, and a culture of selfless service. While many immigrant families successfully establish themselves in Finland, they often face challenges related to social integration, community participation, and maintaining support networks. Women and mothers, in particular, play a crucial role in preserving family well-being while helping their children adapt to a new cultural environment. Recognizing this, the Mother's Day Picnic was designed not only as a celebration of motherhood but also as an opportunity to strengthen social bonds and encourage active community participation.
The event was held outdoors at the beautiful Arboretum in Tampere, providing a relaxed and welcoming setting for families to interact. Although 64 participants had registered for the event, a total of 42 participants, including 22 adults and 20 children, attended the gathering. The atmosphere throughout the afternoon was warm, inclusive, and family-oriented.
The program began with introductions and informal networking activities, allowing participants to meet one another and build new connections within the local community. Various games and recreational activities were organized for children and families, encouraging interaction, teamwork, and shared experiences. One of the most touching moments of the event was when children created handmade Mother's Day cards and wrote personal messages expressing their gratitude and love for their mothers. These simple but meaningful gestures highlighted the importance of family relationships and emotional well-being.

Beyond the celebrations, the event also served as a platform for discussions aligned with SEWA Europe's mission and values. Participants reflected on the importance of giving back to society and explored ways in which families can contribute positively to their local communities. Experiences from SEWA activities and community initiatives were shared, helping participants better understand the role of volunteerism in creating inclusive and compassionate societies.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the role of children in immigrant families. Participants observed that children often become natural bridges between their families and Finnish society because they quickly learn the local language, understand cultural norms, and engage actively with schools and community institutions. It was widely agreed that children should be encouraged from an early age to develop values such as empathy, responsibility, respect, and service to others.
The conversation further explored practical opportunities for family-based volunteering and community service. Ideas included organizing visits to elderly care homes, spending time with senior citizens through board games and social interaction, reading books to elderly residents, and participating in local community support initiatives. Such activities were viewed as valuable opportunities for children to develop social awareness while contributing positively to society.
The gathering concluded with a shared tea and refreshments session, where participants enjoyed homemade snacks and informal conversations. This final part of the event further strengthened relationships among families and reinforced the spirit of togetherness that SEWA Europe seeks to promote through its activities.
The Mother's Day Community Picnic successfully advanced several of SEWA Europe's key objectives in Finland. It provided a platform for community building, encouraged intercultural integration, promoted family engagement, and introduced participants to the principles of volunteerism and social responsibility. Most importantly, it demonstrated how community-centered activities can create meaningful opportunities for families to connect, support one another, and contribute to the wider Finnish society.
Through initiatives such as this, SEWA Europe continues to strengthen its mission of fostering a compassionate, engaged, and service-oriented community across Finland while encouraging both adults and children to become active contributors to the society in which they live.
